ABATE of Minnesota Legislative Update 3/8/2013

Good news freedom fighters, the “Red Light Bill” and the “Headlights On For All Vehicles” are both dead. Thank you to all that wrote letters and sent emails to help defeat these bills.

More good news, there is only one week left for new bills to be introduced into committee and at this time we have not heard any reports of any helmet legislation. This is no small coincidence. Many Legislators were impressed by our presence and message at Bikerday. And I talked to many legislators that heard from constituents and many stated that there is not enough support to pass any legislation that would modify or change the current helmet law at this time. That is the good news; the bad news is while we were at Bikerday I crossed paths with the lobbyist for the brain trauma people that wrote the helmet modification bill language last year. So the message is clear - they are at the Capitol and if we keep the pressure on we can continue to protect our right to make adult decisions when it comes to helmet use.

Now here is the part where you come in, we need all of you to reach out to your elected officials and ask for support of the following:
Please contact your State Representative and ask him or her to support H.F. 1211 and ask your State Senator to support S.F. 724. This is the start seeing motorcycle license plate with $10 from every plate sold will go towards the Motorcycle Safety Fund. The plates will have a “Start Seeing Motorcycles” message that will promote public awareness and the money will promote motorcycle safety, public awareness, and rider education.

Last but not least, we are running out of time to have our “Enhance Penalties” bill heard in committee. I know many of you have made contacts already but I need to ask you again. Ask your elected officials to champion our bill and ask them to please use whatever influence they can to get our bill heard in committee. Please contact your State Representative and ask him or her to support H.F. 277 and contact your State Senator to support S.F. 206. These bills are waiting for the Chair of the Judiciary Committee in their respective houses to add the bill to the committee agenda.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments that you may have.
Stand And Be Counted,

Todd Riba
