Stop Motorcycle Only Checkpoints Nationwide

Motorcycle only checkpoints in Georgia have been funded by the federal government and there is more grant money available for other states to use. The checkpoints are a waste of our hard earned money; these funds would be better spent on public awareness and crash avoidance. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is asking all street riders to support S.127 and H.R. 1861

ABATE Members Needed on Motorcycle Safety Task Force

During the month of May the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office will be accepting applications for the Motorcycle Safety Advisory Task Force. The task force advises the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) on motorcycling issues and provides input to the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Program. The committee meets six times per year at St. Paul College, across the freeway from the State Capitol. The meetings are two hours in length and dinner is provided. The group offers suggestions to the Commissioner of DPS on street motorcycling issues.

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month

American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education (ABATE) of Minnesota would like to inform all Minnesota road users that May is “Motorcycle Awareness Month”. Motorcycles are back on the road and as the temperatures continue to warm there will be more riders out and about. The members of ABATE of Minnesota encourage all drivers to look twice, drive sober, hang up, and pay attention.

Urgent Action Needed on ABATE’s License Plate Bill

The ABATE of Minnesota sponsored “Start Seeing Motorcycles” license plate bill (HF533/SF98) is under consideration in the large transportation bill currently being debated by the Transportation Conference Committee. Last night they took a show of hands on if this bill should be included into law. All House members voted in favor. Unfortunately, every Senate member voted against (even though at least two have expressed support to ABATE members).

Nominate an ABATE Member for the MRF's Young Activist Scholorship

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation Awareness & Education Board is asking for your help in nominating candidates for this year's Young Activist Scholarship (YAS). Below is the information about this program. Please review the membership of your ABATE chapter and submit your nominations by July 15th. The winner gets free round trip airfare, hotel accommodations and conference registration to MRF’s Meeting of the Minds conference in September (and more). This program is a great way to get younger riders involved in our organization.

Thanks for your help!

ABATE Success- Increased Penalties for Negligent Driving Effective August 1st

ABATE of Minnesota is proud to announce that our “Reckless Driving” legislation that we have been working on was signed into law by Governor Dayton. This law will take affect August 1st, 2015, and it will give prosecutors the option of charging “Reckless Drivers” who kill or cause great bodily harm with a Gross Misdemeanor. ABATE of MN members have worked on this legislation for many years so this is a welcome reward for all of the time, money, dedication, and hard work.

Updated - Call to Action from the MRF

THE AMENDMENT HAS PASSED! Thank you for everyone who made calls over the past few days.

Big Victory for Street Riders in DC, but....

The street riders of this great country scored a major victory recently in the U.S. House of Representatives. The “Walberg Amendment” to the 2016 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill struck a provision that would have overturned the U.S. Department of Transportation lobby ban. The lobby ban prohibits the US  Department of Transportation from using taxpayer money to lobby states to pass mandatory helmet laws.
